We were asked to look at brands with similar characteristics to ours and create a case study as to why they are so effective and how they achieve what they set out to do. This included looking at brands with similar colour personality, target users, direct competitors, shared brand values, those which are primarily screen based and those with a tone of voice that I admire.

Same Colour Personality

I am not entirely sure of the colour scheme that I am going to go for with my brand but I am considering either a basic white logo design against a coloured background or using a colour with personality similar to IKEA’s blue and yellow theme. I really like this as they are good complementary colours, how great contrast while also adapting positive connotations.

IKEA

IKEA is a Swedish-founded multinational group that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchen appliances and home accessories, among other useful goods and occasionally home services.

The IKEA Brand blue colour creates attention to the offer, thereby making it stand out. The IKEA Brand yellow, on the other hand, is an optimistic colour giving customers a positive impression when meeting the IKEA Brand, everywhere, anytime.

The colours found in the logo of IKEA are light blue and yellow, there are specific colour codes used for digital or print projects that need to use specific color values to match their company color palette.

IKEA’s First Logos

The first ever logo for IKEA was created in 1951. It was round in shape and used the colour red. IKEA founder, Ingvar Kamprad, liked the colour red because it represents low price.

The blue and yellow colours of the logo are also the colours of the Swedish flag, so they remind of the company’s origin. In 1982, IKEA decided to stick with this colour combination — a yellow circle placed inside a blue rectangle and blue lettering in the middle of it all. This is the scheme which represents the company at its best, pointing on happiness, ease, reliability, and safety.

The Difference Between 1983 and 2018 Logo

Though both looking very similar, the blue and yellow logo was remade in 2018 with small minor changes overall affecting the look of the IKEA logo. These changes are shown below.

There was an increased height of the oval that allows the letters to be a bit bigger. The flares in the letters have been reduced, which were particularly busy in the old “E”, making that letter look heavier. The counterspaces of the “A” have been opened up and the angles of the “K” have been modified
