Before beginning to draw out designs for my app screens, I looked at a few different designers’ app screens on Dribbble to give me some inspiration of layouts. I also looked at a few different icon sets to see which designs I liked best and created a moodboard.

I then began sketching out my screen ideas, giving a few different layout options for each screen. I had a look at the navigation bar, shapes and potential icon designs that will be included throughout the entirety of my app.

Launch Screen

I started with planning my launch screen - the screen that will show once the app is selected. I was torn between my launch screen taking you immediately to the home section where you can scroll or use the navigation bar along the bottom, or whether to create one almost like an options screen that you can select which area of the app you want to use. I did quite like the idea of an options screen however as I feel that the home-style screen is a lot like Instagram which I don’t necessarily want.

Home Screen & Profile

I had a look at the home screen section which was mainly inspired by an Instagram or Facebook screen that you can continuously scroll down. Though I did decide that I would like it to be split into two columns to maximise screen space and show more photos at once. This means in order to read a caption or view location details, you would have to click into the chosen image. On the home page, I also included a quick link of favourite locations that you could see the story of. This was inspired by Snapchat’s ‘Our Story’ feature - but the main idea is to get an overall vibe of what’s going on in that particular location on that particular day.
