I also wanted to look a little bit into my target audience before beginning my designs so that I know who I am aiming my app towards and how I can match the theme to my target audience.

My target audience would be primarily younger travellers (late teens and younger adults) between 18-25 years. This is because during the summer or on placement year / gap year at university, people tend to go travelling and I think this would be a great app to have alongside their travels. This does not mean that older or younger users will not enjoy my travel app as it would be great for all travellers, but I am primarily focussing it on this age group.

What Do Young People Want in Apps?

From my own experience as a young person, I like apps that are easy to navigate such as having icons for different categories, not being too complex or having too many features that I feel overwhelmed, fast-running, apps that my friends also use and apps that allow me to be creative or be myself.

From Other Research

Messaging - mobile apps that make it easy to communicate with others.

Socialising - They enjoy seeing where their friends are, looking at pictures they take, interacting with multiple friends at once and sharing their own stories.

Looking at Images - Young people are visual. That’s why Snapchat and Instagram are so popular. They love looking at images, sharing images and uploading their own images.

Expressing Thoughts - Apps give them the freedom to instantly express how they feel and to connect with others who feel the same way.

Mindsea

I also found some secondary research conducted by by a company known as Mindsea where they have created infographics that shows what type of apps millennials use the most and what has the biggest influence on their app decisions.
